The Rotary Club of Falmouth will be hosting an Earth Day "Plant-A-Tree" ceremony at Spohr Gardens as part of Rotary International's environmental sustainability initiative. The event, which is free and open to the public, will take place at Spohr Gardens during Daffodil Days on Saturday, April 21st at 12 Noon.
Rotary International President, Ian H. S. Riseley has challenged every Rotary club across the globe to make a difference by planting a tree for each of its members. “The time is long past when environmental sustainability can be dismissed as not Rotary’s concern. It is, and must be, everyone’s concern,” he said. Riseley made the case that protecting the environment and curbing climate change are essential to Rotary’s goal of sustainable service. With over 35,000 Rotary clubs and an average of 35 members each, the effort would yield over 1.2 million new trees planted by Rotarians this year.

Gardens. Falmouth Rotary Club members, along with volunteers from Cub Scout Pack 41 of East Falmouth will plant a selection of 10 mostly native trees including American Holly, Sassafras, Harlequin Glory Bower, Magnolia, Rum Cherry, and Redbud varieties. The ceremony will take place in the Eastern Butterfly Garden area of Spohr Gardens.

- A full-grown tree absorbs carbon dioxide (CO2) at a rate of 48 lbs. per year.
- An acre of trees annually consumes the amount of carbon dioxide equivalent to that produced by driving an average car for 26,000 miles.
- Trees do more than absorb CO2. They produce oxygen necessary for us to survive.
- A full-grown tree emits enough oxygen per day to support two adults.
